Isn't my baby so cute helping his mom-mom water the garden!
On Tuesday I delivered (via bike trailer of course) Tyler's cupcakes to school for his "un-birthday" celebration (since he's a summer birthday). While cupcakes with homemade butter cream icing and dye-free sprinkles. Not as exciting as Tyler would like, but it's nearly impossible to find dye-free options! Tyler had a great day as the birthday boy!
On Tuesday afternoon, after Jason's speech and Tyler's school pick-up, I brought the boys to the Pinelands library for a "snack attack" program for Tyler. On the way in we noticed two baby birds that had seemingly fallen from the high tree branches above (we could even hear birds chirping up there). We could see that the one bird was definitely still alive, but the bird beneath him didn't seem to be. Not wanting to touch them (in case the mother was planning some sort of rescue mission) we went inside and spoke to the front desk. No one there had known the birds were outside but the information desk offered to call around and see if there was anything we could or should do for them. I mentioned that Cedar Run takes in injured animals and I would be willing to bring them there if necessary. While Jason and I read and colored in the other room she apparently got in touch with Cedar Run who suggested we put them in a box and drive them there. So the librarian soon delivered me two small baby birds in a paper-lined cardboard box. Of course all the kids had to get a look at them first, and then the boys and I took off for Cedar Run. Luckily we got there 5 minutes before they closed. They did confirm the one bird was already dead but the other immediately started eating. The were too little to be entirely certain, but they believe they were baby sparrows. So cute. And what a great place Cedar Run is!
After briefly stopping at McDonald's for some food we picked up Jeanne and the kids and head to Neeta for a fun night fundraiser for the Medford Lakes Education Foundation. The kids had fun with a craft, bingo, face painting, and watching a performance from the cast of the school's Beauty & The Beast production. Jason had his face painted for the first time, which lead to Tyler finally realizing that face paint isn't scary (he previously would only allow his hands/arms to be painted).
On Wednesday, after an unexpected half-day at school for Tyler due to the high heat and humidity (with lack of air conditioning), Jason succumbed to a car nap on the way to Tyler's counseling appointment. Lack of naps and poor sleep can do that to a boy.
Thursday, after our morning OT session, we had our long-awaited appointment with the neurosurgeon over at CHOP in Philly. My parents had both arranged to come with me and Beth had offered to take Tyler from school and keep him until we got home. Of course due to the 2nd half-day due to heat/humidity, I had to drop him off way earlier than he would have gotten done school (huge thank you to Beth). We got there and waited for quite a while before the receptionist told us that the doctor had been paged due to an emergency. They offered to reschedule for us or allow us to wait it out. After all of the previous waiting we had for this appointment in the first place, there was no way I was leaving. So they suggested we go take a walk and grab some dinner and they'd call when he got back. It turns out the McDonald's is right IN the hospital (in another wing a long ways away though). We weren't gone too long though when we got the call that the doctor had returned. It turned out to be a very brief appointment, with all good news. He feels the Chiari was an "incidental finding", meaning that it was pure coincidence that we found this condition while he had the brain MRI to rule out a brain tumor. He does not feel that the condition is having any effect on his current functioning and in no way explains any of his delays or even the tremors he had been experiencing. So no brain surgery!!!! He does will want us to be followed by neurology, as well as have the sleep study (cause Chiari can cause sleep apnea) but otherwise he said he has no restrictions (as he gets older he might not be able to play contact sports and such). We need only be concerned if he starts having lots of balance problems, starts slurring his speech, or begins to gag often while eating/drinking. So, good news all around. Of course no answers, but as he stated, we have ruled out something else. Meanwhile Tyler had a ball playing with his friend Mackenzie!
Friday morning was Tyler's school's field day. They had asked for volunteers, so a friend set me up with a job that I could do with Jason in tow. So I was in charge of filling up and distributing cups of water at the water station. Pretty big deal, huh? Anyway, I did get to sneak away to get a few peeks of Tyler participating in his field day. All of the kids had a blast!
And yet another heat/humidity half-day of school! Totally messing up my plans with things I need to get done before the end of the school year!
Friday night Jason said "of ooo" (love you) when I tucked him in and said I loved him. So cute!
Saturday morning started out with the boys and I participating in a local field clean-up to help hosted by the Junior Woman's Auxiliary.
We continued the clean-up efforts at home as well. My dad was busy screening in our porch, so the boys and I dragged out all their toys and scrubbed them down (they had been covered in dust and pollen and lord knows what else). It's still amazing to me how much fun two boys can have with a bucket of water, some washcloths, and some toothbrushes.
On Saturday night the boys and myself made our way to my sister-in-law's house for a small family party for her daughter's first birthday. Olivia is getting so big (it's been way too long since we've seen her) and she looks so cute as she's just starting to walk. The boys had fun making their own pizzas and enjoying watermelon and of course later some cake. I'm so glad i was able to be a part of her party. Such a cutie!
On Sunday I dropped Tyler off at his friend Luke's sports-themed party. And somehow the rain held out for them!
After dropping off Tyler at his party Jason crashed in the car on the way to Walmart (again). I guess that's what happens when you don't think you need to nap for a few days in a row. I sat in the car with him napping for maybe 10 minutes but then couldn't wait any longer so I woke him to get him out of his carseat. He was so tired that he promptly fell back to sleep on my shoulder where he remained for most of my shopping trip. This is not something that most mom's would document unless you happen to have a child who is such a light sleeper like mine is. He's NEVER slept like this.
On Sunday night we had an end-of-year pack meeting to attend, complete with awards and smores over the campfire (and of course a few songs). Jason managed to hurt his eye on something and spent a good portion of the time whining about that (I could see no mark).
